The government is pushing ahead with its plan to boost national defence spending by nearly 7% next year, in a move expected to spur a resurgence of old-fashioned defence spending, experts say.

Key points: Federal government is pushing ahead with $3.7 billion of increase in defence spending

But critics say $4 billion shortfall in defence over 10 years is unacceptable

Federal Government said in July it will boost defence spending by about 7% next year

The Federal Government will continue to spend about $30 billion a year on defence, in line with forecasts under the Coalition, Defence Minister Christopher Pyne has confirmed.

Mr Pyne has said the increase will be in line with the $100 billion a year Defence Industry Act of 2014 which the federal government is moving ahead on.

This is expected to provide for an additional $4 billion of defence expenditure over 10 years from 2016.

But the Government has already allocated $1.7 billion, or 7.9%, of this sum to Australia's military-focused "special mission" troops, and is only tolling $2.5 billion to "all-weather" troops.

"That's a very modest rate," Defence Australia's Defence Parliamentary Assistant Minister of Defence Andrew Bowen told ABC News Breakfast.

"It's certainly higher than some other countries but certainly lower than some other countries."

The increase will also include $400 million to increase the training and support of the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Defence Intelligence Organisation, as well as $300 million to provide equipment for the armed forces, including $400 million to upgrade the Australian Army's armoured fighting vehicle.

Critics say $4 billion shortfall in defence over the decade is unacceptable, particularly given that defence spending will be raised by another $6 billion this year, which would still leave the gap about $9 billion.

However, the Government says the shortfall will be fixed in its Defence Force Transformation Act.

This is due to be tabled on Tuesday.

ABC national security analyst David Lythgoe said while the Defence Budget, and the amount of new funding for national security, was a key element of the Coalition's defence policy, Mr Pyne said more was needed in the area of domestic defence.

"This is more of a structural reform, this is an increase, it's an increase in the size of the military and not the number of personnel in the military.

"The Defence Minister knows this."

Under the current Defence Force Transformation Act, the amount of funding will be frozen at $55 billion over five years.

The Government says the Defence Force Transformation Act will "ensure the most capable and professional armed forces in th

Two peole die in queensland housefire and the fire spread to several of our houses," said one of the neighbors, who spoke on condition that his identity not be used. "They had to find another fireplace."

Two other residents told Fox that they'd seen a few residents in the community evacuate the building during the fire. One resident said the neighborhood was in "out of the woods" near the southern edge of the town at the time of the blaze. "People have been gone for five days. There were no cars on the streets," he said.

In a statement issued early Wednesday, the fire department said they've received "an increase in complaints concerning fires at the Fire and Police Departments."

"It has taken many days of hard work to bring this fire under control and it is now under control. It is still unsafe to leave your home. It will be a few days before we are ready to put people back in their homes safely," the department said.

Fox 8 contacted the fire department earlier this month but has yet to hear back.
