Qld labor conference to focus on irresponsibility

Posted

A federal union leader says a major labor conference in Washington on Tuesday could turn violent if delegates do not reach a common position on immigration.

Mr Morrison is the leader of the Australian union of nurses, which opposes the government's temporary foreign worker program.

Labor has come under significant pressure since the weekend when an immigration official was detained in China.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton called on the delegates to reach a "fair and balanced approach" that "ensures that we are focusing on the issues that matter most to all Australians".

"There will be a number of speakers at the labor conference and we need to reach an understanding with them on how we can best manage the immigration system," Mr Dutton said.

Mr Morrison says some of his former staff and friends have expressed concern at the prospect of a riot.

"There's going to be some of us that will be really unhappy at the possibility of people getting involved," he said.

"We need to ensure that the conference is peaceful and not to invite any problems, any violence, in the interest of the conference or the members of the conference."

Police charge driver over fatal crash at williamtownpark

Pilot of pickup vehicle hit and killed by SUV in Williamstown dies

Driver's vehicle slammed into a utility truck while trying to avoid traffic at Williamtown Park in downtown Williamstown, police said Tuesday.

The crash happened around 4:48 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Fitchburg Road and Williamtown Road, said Sgt. John Zemla of the Williamstown Police Department.

The woman was driving south on the intersection when the pickup truck hit the truck in front of her, Zemla said.

The truck then veered to the right, flipped the pickup and then rolled forward on its side, said Michael Schoepfer, director of traffic management at the Williamstown Fire Department.

Fire crews rushed the woman to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. She was not hurt, Zemla said.

The truck driver didn't stop immediately after colliding with the car, Zemla said.

The pickup driver, a 41-year-old male, was charged with failure to stop and run a stop sign, failing to signal a turn to allow vehicles coming in the crosswalk, failing to yield to a vehicle approaching in the crosswalk, failing to yield to a vehicle approaching from the left, failing to yield to a pedestrian on a pedestrian signal and failing to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk, Zemla said.

The man was not on any of the citations, Zemla said.
