Foley dismisses leadership coup talk, calls for new party
"I want to be honest. This is about the future of the party."
He claimed to have only been contacted by the party after the election was called, but dismissed any leadership plot with the party's members.
"I have been given this opportunity.
"We want a new leadership so we can focus on making sure that we go ahead with the plans we have outlined now," said Foley.
There was confusion among supporters that Foley, who served as chairman in the Coalition Government from May 2009, has resigned from the party, however his position has not changed since the last leadership election in 2011.
In 2010, former foreign minister Bob Carr was forced to resign from the party after he was found to be in breach of parliamentary rules for allegedly receiving "cash and favours" from the private prison company Corrections Corporation of America in the late 1990s.
In that case, he resigned two months later from the National Party's leadership.
Foley added: "I am not going to be a party member in a leadership contest and neither am I going to have a leadership role when I am leader."
The National Party was rocked by a leadership election two weeks ago in which it was defeated to former education minister Alex Attwood, who was elected to the upper house, but was ultimately forced to walk out.
Last week, the party announced an interim leader would step in until Foley could find a new party chairman.

Updated at 5:04 p.m. Thursday with statements from the university and an additional statement from Bergen State College.
Bergen State College officials have released the results of their investigation of a sexual assault that allegedly occurred on the campus of the New Jersey university during the 1970s and 1980s.
The allegations are contained in the official results of the Bergen State College, NJ, Police Department.
Among the charges being investigated, the Bergen State College Police Department say that there were several allegations of penetration and oral penetration that date from the early 1980s to the late 1980s. All these incidents were reported to the Bergen State College Police Department by concerned adults who did not wish to pursue criminal charges in connection with the incidents. Some of these individuals are now deceased, as are some individuals who were believed to be the assailants.
The department has not been made aware of any incidents that occurred prior to 1980.
There is no credible information to indicate that Bergen State College College knew of or condoned any criminal behavior on campus during that time period. The Bergen State College Police Department is also committed to an ongoing, non-discriminatory and effective police culture of respect and confidentiality, which is intended to maintain student safety.
While the Bergen State College Police Department cannot state when any incidents occurred, they believe that the crimes did take place during the early 1980s to early 1990s. They do know that at least one alleged victim indicated that the incidents occurred in the late 1970s.
There is no indication whatsoever that the allegations are related to other Bergen State College victims.
Bergen State College University Police Department officers are handling the matters.
• Bergen State College police are not taking a position on any matters related to this case. The incident remains under investigation by the Bergen State College Police Department and is being treated as a criminal matter.
• University Police are not taking a position on the pending investigation. The case is now under review by the New Jersey State Police.
• The Bergen State College Police Department is the only police agency in Bergen County that is not a part of an investigation into a sexual assault at Bergen State College. The case is being handled as a federal civil rights matter.
• The information shared by the campus is not public. It is currently available only through the Bergen County Police Department. No further information can be publicly released.
